The Long Line series
In 2022, I set out to make a video about the full length of my local line, the Hurstbridge line. The aim was not to make a complete history of the line, but to focus on tangible interesting details: I wanted to show regular Hurstbridge line commuters that their line is, in fact, very interesting. The video took 10 months to produce, and came in at 40 minutes and 1 second long, and when I released it on 2nd of June 2023, I did not expect it to be a popular video. It was a passion project, and I thought it was far too long for a general audience.
Leaning in to this as a bit of a joke, I named the video:
'A video where I talk about the Hurstbridge line for 40 minutes!'
However, I could not have been more wrong, and the video's reception was extremely positive: it quickly became one of my most popular videos. This response inspired me to begin work on a second episode, which was released on 27th of April 2024 as 'A video where I talk about the Upfield line for 38 minutes!'
When the Upfield video got a similarly positive reception, I decided to aim for a complete series, planning to cover every line on the Melbourne suburban network in this style: something I anticipate to take many, many years to complete. The third episode, 'A video where I talk about the Werribee line for 67 minutes!' was published on New Years Eve 2024, and the fourth episode, 'A video where I talk about the Lilydale line for 102 minutes!' came out on June 13th 2026. The series is often referred to by myself and others as 'the long line series,' but it's official name is 'A series where I talk about Melbourne railway lines for 247 minutes!'
